Customs data shows China imported 549.2 billion chips in 2024, up 14.51% year on year. Although domestic chip output also rose — 451.4 billion units for the year, up 22.2% — the continued growth in imports shows a gap remains between domestic demand and local supply. Domestic technology in high-end chips is still insufficient, with continued import dependence in key categories such as processors and memory. Achieving self-reliance requires greater R&D investment, breaking through technical bottlenecks, completing the supply chain, training professional talent and raising the competitiveness of the domestic chip industry.
