Micron Technology, Inc. is a global leading semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Boise, Idaho, USA. It was founded in 1978 and is chaired by Sanjay Mehrotra. As of 2022, Micron employed 48,000 people.

Micron primarily manufactures and sells NAND flash, DRAM and NOR flash memory devices, along with other memory technologies, packaging solutions and semiconductor systems, and also produces CMOS image sensors and other semiconductor components. Its products are used in computer systems, network equipment, telecom products, PCs, workstations, servers, mesh networking systems, mobile phones, wireless devices, digital cameras and gaming systems.

Milestones in Micron's history include:

  • 1981 — mass production of the first 64K product, widely used in the first mass-produced PCs.
  • 1984 — the world's smallest 256K DRAM chip at the time.
  • 1987 — the 1Mb DRAM became an indispensable component of PC main memory and graphics in the 1980s and 1990s.
  • 1988 — introduced the first video RAM and fast static RAM products, extending the portfolio.
  • 2002 — the industry's first 1Gb DDR on a 110nm process, cementing its leadership.
  • 2004 — returned to the title of "the industry's most cost-competitive memory manufacturer" with the 6F2 cell architecture.
  • 2011 — launched the world's first 20nm MLC NAND together with Intel.
  • 2014 — led the industry with the first monolithic 8Gb DDR3 SDRAM, and two years later founded the Xccela industry alliance.
  • 2020 — low-power DDR5 DRAM launched, boosting 5G network connectivity and supporting advanced AI applications.

Micron's global business is extensive. In China it operates marketing and IC design centres in Shanghai and marketing offices in Beijing and Shenzhen. In September 2005 Micron selected Xi'an for its semiconductor factory in China, covering module assembly and chip packaging and testing.

Micron has received numerous honours, including 31st place on the Forbes Global Digital Economy 100 in 2019, 134th on the Fortune US 500 in 2020, 208th on the Forbes Global 2000 in 2021, the 2022 EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE AWARDS Best Diversity and Inclusion Strategy award, and inclusion in Bloomberg's Gender-Equality Index in 2023.

Note that in May 2023 Micron products sold in China were placed under a purchase ban, and in March 2024 CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated that Micron plans to expand its investment in China.
